Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, has strongly denied claims made by National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Faadiel Adams. Adams accused Smith of plotting to have him killed.
In a social media video posted over the weekend, Adams alleged that members of the DA in the City of Cape Town warned him that his life was in danger.
Adams claims Smith instructed a DA member to tell a Manenberg gang figure that his DA membership, tenders, and contract opportunities would be cut because of Adams. Adams further alleged that this amounted to an attempt to get the man to “take him out”.
Smith has rejected the accusations, calling them “an utterly ridiculous attempt to tarnish my reputation, that of the Democratic Alliance, and the City of Cape Town.”
He says the allegations are part of a broader campaign of “misinformation” by the NCC, timed to coincide with the City’s ramped-up anti-gang efforts.

“This past week, the City committed nearly 200 personnel to assist SAPS in joint operations targeting gang activity, a move that clearly irks the NCC and their funders. Their latest smear campaign is laughable at best,” Smith said.
Smith confirmed that he has consulted his lawyers and plans to pursue legal action against Adams.
Smith said the City is committed to tackling gang violence and accused the NCC of “spreading lies via TikTok and Facebook Live” rather than helping affected communities.
“Let us not forget: this is the same party that opposed the devolution of additional policing powers to local government, and voted against deploying more Metro Police officers to the Cape Flats,” he said.
