The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs says a full-scale investigation has been launched to find out exactly what happened that lead to the escape of an unknown number of crocodiles from a breeding-farm near Bonnievale.
Spokesperson for MEC, Anton Bredell, James-Brent Styan says the juvenile crocodiles escaped from the facility about 2 weeks ago, and it is believed that the majority of the animals ended up in the Bree River, about 300m from the farm.
Styan says 66 of the reptiles have been accounted for.
To date, CapeNature can account for 52 of the crocodiles that escaped from a facility in Bonnievale last week. In partnership with a SAPS diving team, the facility owner and neighbouring land owners, the search is continuing.
