Young girls from a small community are learning the art of sowing to sustain themselves, thanks to the 98 year old sewing-work-teacher Tannie Grietjie Barry from Amalienstein near Calitzdorp. Tannie Grietjie has been sewing since she was 7 years old and decided to share her skills and experience with women in her community.
She occasionally uses her pension money to offer lessons to young women and also makes attire for the community’s riel-dansers.
Aunt Grietjie says it is a wonderful feeling to see the many young women interested in her sewing-lessons.
