The Independent Electoral Commission has reminded politicians that they now serve the South African public, and that political parties must deliver on their promises of delivering services and good governance.

The IEC’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, during the announcement of the 2021 local government elections last night, said South Africans braved various challenges to be able to cast their vote.

Mambolo congratulated victorious candidates, but reminded them that they now fill these positions, thanks to the voting public.

12.3 million people voted in the elections. The ANC achieved a majority in 161 municipalities, the DA in 13 municipalities, and the IFP in 10 municipalities.

There are 66 hung councils, which means coalitions will have to be formed.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has also called on parties to make good on the promises they made to the voters.

Meanwhile, Cape Town Mayor Elect Geordin Hill Lewis has thanked residents for putting their trust in him and the DA for the next five years. The party received 58.22% of the vote in the Cape Town Metro

Hill Lewis says the results show that Capetonians have strongly affirmed the DA’s track record of delivering the best basic services to all residents.

Hill Lewis will be inaugurated in two weeks.
