CPUT & UWC hosting Open Days this weekend

open

Prospective University students have been encouraged to attend the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and University of the Western Cape (UWC) Open Days, which are both being held on Saturday, 9 May in Bellville.

The events are free and grant learners an opportunity to find out about the various study opportunities available at the two institutions.

The UWC Open Day will feature career exhibitions, faculty presentations, and guided campus tours.

Visitors will receive practical advice on admissions, financial aid, and academic programmes, while engaging directly with lecturers, admissions staff, and current students.

CPUT‘s Open Day will be held on its Bellville Campus, and learners and their parents can explore a range of study options, including up to 80 career-focused courses.

Six faculties of Business and Management Sciences, Health and Wellness Sciences, Education Sciences, Informatics and Design, Applied Sciences and Engineering and the Built Environment will all be exhibiting on the day.

CPUT says competition for a first-year place remains fierce, with close to 500,000 first-year applications received for only 9000 spots.

In a statement, the institution says learners can get ahead of the pack by attending the Open Day and chatting directly to the staff and students in the courses that interest them, while also getting all the relevant application details.

Open Day Details:

CPUT:

  • Where: Bellville Campus on Symphony Way
  • Time: 9 am to 4 pm

UWC:

  • Where: Main Campus, Bellville, Robert Sobukwe Drive

77 arrests & 22 deaths during WCape long weekend traffic operations

77 serious road-related arrests were made last week, as the Western Cape Mobility Department embarked on high-visibility operations, especially over the long weekend.

The department said 36,000 vehicles were stopped between 28 April and 3 May.

Driving under the influence, again, contributed to the majority of the arrests made, with 62 motorists taken into custody for this.

“In Beaufort West on Sunday, a man was arrested for driving under the influence and resisting arrest. In Vredenburg on Friday, another motorist was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving after failing to stop and attempting to flee, leading to a high-speed chase before being apprehended,” said the department.

Outside of drunk driving, reckless motorist behaviour and speeding are additional concerns for the department. It noted that another motorist was arrested near Beaufort West for driving at 164 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Other arrests were made for fraudulent documentation.

Ahead of last week’s operation, Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku highlighted that traffic officers are facing continued hostility from motorists. Following the most recent operation, the department noted incidents in which traffic officers were threatened or bribed.

“A taxi driver was arrested at the Rawsonville weighbridge on Sunday for allegedly threatening a traffic officer, while another man in Beaufort West on Thursday was arrested for attempting to induce an officer to act unlawfully.”

Meanwhile, the reporting period also saw the deaths of 22 road users, in 20 crashes across the province. Pedestrians made up the highest number of fatalities, at 12, while eight passengers, one cyclist and one motorcyclist were also killed on the roads.

“Traffic officers are working hard to protect lives, and enforcement will remain firm to ensure those who endanger others are held accountable. Residents and visitors are urged to obey the rules of the road, avoid driving under the influence, and remain alert, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity,” said the department.

Fuel price shock reigniting work-from-home debate

work from home

Another sharp fuel price hike in May is set to intensify where people work from, particularly as living in economic hubs is becoming increasingly unaffordable.

Economists say rising global oil prices, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, are placing immense pressure on urban commuters already grappling with high transport costs.

Independent economist John Loos says the knock-on effects could be significant, particularly for households reliant on daily travel.

“For urban commuters, this will imply a significant transport cost increase, and it is to be expected that many households will look for ways to manage such increases,” Loos explains.

While cutting back on non-essential travel may offer some relief, daily commuting remains unavoidable for many, especially those dependent on private vehicles. But, as seen during COVID-19 lockdowns, a sizeable portion of office-based workers could turn again to remote or hybrid work as a cost-saving measure.

“The debate around remote and hybrid work may well intensify,” Loos notes, adding that sustained high fuel prices could trigger shifts in the labour market.

He argues that the financial and time-saving advantages of working from home are becoming harder to ignore.

“Remote work arguments are particularly powerful when it comes to reducing unproductive commuting time and financial costs.”

Should fuel prices remain elevated, companies offering flexible work arrangements may gain a competitive edge in attracting talent.

“Employers who do offer greater flexibility could see their companies more sought after as places to work,” Loos adds, suggesting this could even lower recruitment costs over time.

Legal experts, however, caution that flexibility is not guaranteed. Leila Moosa, a senior associate in employment law at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, points out that there is currently no automatic legal right to work from home.

“From a legal perspective, there is no statutory or legal right for a person to work remotely,” Moosa says, adding that such an arrangement would depend on employment contracts or company policies.

She adds that employers considering remote work policies should adopt a structured and clearly communicated approach, balancing operational needs with employee expectations.

“The first step would be to look at what your contracts and policies say and whether this is something that you can implement. Look at your business, what does your business need? Is it something that’s possible to work with your operational requirements? Because you cannot compromise on that in order for the sustainability of your business into the future to continue. And then, of course, that ties in with secured employment in the future.”

For many labour-intensive sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare and customer-facing industries, working from home is simply not a practical option.

This reality is likely to require a different set of conversations between employers and employees, focused less on location flexibility and more on ways to ease the financial strain of rising transport costs.
