When Robin Bergsma, a 42 year old sterilization technician from Montana, and Jorine Carlse, a 38 year old professional nurse at Red Cross Children’s Hospital, came to the Smile FM studios on Tuesday morning, little did Jorine know that she would be leaving with a sparkling diamond ring on her finger.
Robin brought Jorine to Smile FM under the guise of taking part in The Mating Game, a fun quiz game that where couples get tested on how well they know each other. Everyone, except Jorine, was in on it and knew the real reason for their visit – so that Robin could propose to Jorine live on the Smile Breakfast show.
The couple met 17 years ago, when Robin and Jorine’s mom, Aunty Catherine, were colleagues and Robin often used to give her a lift home. Robin was introduced to Jorine by Aunty Catherine and the two then started chatting on Mxit (yes, that’s how long ago it was!) and fell head over heels in love.
They had many ups and downs over the years (like any couple) but their love for each other only grew stronger with time. Yet, one question remained unanswered: why aren’t they married after being together for 17 years? If you ask Robin, he’ll tell you that there was just never a good time and the logistics and cost involved to arrange a wedding, always seemed daunting to him. Ask Jorine, and she’ll say it’s simple, “my babes just never popped the question”.
But then, as they were about to play The Mating Game live on Smile Breakfast and Jorine least expected it, Robin proposed.
Jorine always said that when they do get engaged, she would want to get married within three months. Bobby and Lindy took note of her wish and spotted an opportunity – how about tying the knot on Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year? The couple agreed and the wedding date was set.
But Valentine’s Day is only a week away! Can Smile Breakfast arrange an entire wedding in such a short time? “We’ll try our best, but we need all the help we can get”, says Bobby and Lindy.
