Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla says he’s cautiously optimistic that South Africa will not have to endure stricter lockdown restrictions this holiday season, but it also depends on people’s behaviour.

The National Coronavirus Command Council is expected to meet today to make recommendations about possible new measures. The discovery of the Omicron variant has raised concerns about the sharp increase in infections, but Phaahla says hospitalizations are lower than last year at this time.
