The Zero Dropout Campaign has called on national Government to do more to ensure that more South African learners, who start Grade 1, end up writing and passing their Grade 12 examinations.
The lobby group says that even before the Covid-19 pandemic, 40-percent of children who started Grade 1, dropped out of school before reaching Matric.
Communications lead at the Zero Dropout Campaign, Rahima Essop says other challenges, such as the lack of access to learning materials and a safe study-environment, also need to be addressed.
Essop says addressing this high drop-out rate will, in the long-run, address the country’s high unemployment rate.
