The man who tragically died after being trampled by an elephant at the Gondwana Private Game Reserve near Mossel Bay has been identified as 39-year-old FC Conradie, CEO and co-owner of the reserve.
The incident occurred early on the morning of Tuesday, 22 July, at approximately 08:00. Conradie was declared dead at the scene. Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp of the KwaNonqaba Police Station confirmed that authorities are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.

In a statement, Sales Manager at Gondwana, Priscilla Taylor, shared what a close family friend and spokesperson for the reserve had to say:
“This is an unimaginable loss. FC was more than a leader—he was a mentor, a visionary, and a truly remarkable human being. We kindly ask for privacy and space for the family during this incredibly difficult time. Everyone who knew FC is grieving deeply.”
Taylor said the team at Gondwana, along with many across the conservation and tourism sectors, have been left in shock. Conradie is described as a passionate conservationist and a central figure in establishing Gondwana as one of South Africa’s foremost private game reserves.
His legacy, Taylor said, includes commitment to wildlife conservation, community upliftment, and sustainable tourism. She said his leadership style was marked by compassion, purpose, and integrity. Adding that his absence, according to his colleagues, leaves “a void that cannot be filled”.
Conradie was a husband and father of three.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife, children, extended family, friends, and the entire Gondwana team during this time of mourning,” said Taylor.
Gondwana has asked the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
