Gang Tensions Rise After Deadly Mitchells Plain Shooting

Published on

A late night shooting in Mitchells Plain has sparked suspected gang retaliation in Lentegeur.

On Sunday, a 34 year old was shot and killed in Tracy Crescent, Montrose Park.

Lentegeur Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Byron De Villiers says tension remains high in the area following the attack which, left another person injured.

“The shooting has sparked retaliation as a new gang war is currently under way. We urge the authorities to continue their efforts to clamp down on crime and we are appealing to the greater community to come forward with any information that could assist in tracking down those involved.”

De Viilers believes the attack may have been in retaliation for a gang member that was shot and wounded earlier this month.

Lentegeur police have since registered a murder and an attempted murder case.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk says the deceased was involved in a car chase, in which he was struck by a bullet.

“A 34-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded and another injured. The injured victim was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. According to reports four unidentified males in a M1 blue VW Golf chased them and randomly shot at them fatally wounding the 34-year-old victim. Motive is believed to be gang related.”

De Villiers says gang related crimes has increased in the area and believes that no one should die such a gruesome death, whether they are involved in gang crimes or not.
