Ford & Friends rev up Killarney’s Power Series

Published on

Round 5 of the Power Series presented by Wingfield Motors and Smile 90.4 FM at Killarney on Saturday 27 May has some special attractions in store for fans of American muscle cars, as the Ford & Friends visitors from around the country rev up the Fun Factor.

There are All Ford races, featuring hot-shot local Fords as well as at least one thundering Modified V8 specially brought back to life for this event, as well as a number of visiting Blue Oval entries.

On-track action includes a full programme of races for modified Saloon Cars, big thundering V8 Masters (Ford powered, of course!), three categories of motorcycles, from 300cc Supersport machines to 150kW litre-class Superbikes, and the second running of the of the Wild Rose Gin 100km race over 31 laps for the Spitfire Furniture Sports & GT Cars.

Static displays of Ford and Chevrolet cars, as well as a special tribute to the 50th anniversary of the South Africa-only Chev Firenza Can-Am V8, make the day a festival of big engines and smoking tyres – THRILLS AND FAMILY FUN for petrolheads of all ages.

At the same time the Witzenberg Motorklub will be running a gymkhana event on our new Spinning Pitch on the west (Blaauwberg) side of the facility. Gymkhanas consist of timed speed pattern racing over a set course, usually within a very limited space such as our Spinning Pitch.

Just about anyone can enter, provided that you have a driving licence and a car that can pass the safety checks. The stars of the show, however, are the purpose built rear-wheel drive machines. These are crowd favourites as drivers use the rear wheels and loud pedal to make it around the tight U-turns; some get carried away and end up doing a few more circles than is necessary, but it’s all part of the fun!

And if you pre-purchase your spectator tickets at the special introductory prices from our new online ticket sales provider Ticketmaster at https://www.ticketmaster.co.za, you get all this for just R60 for adults, R10 for under-16s and free for under-12s. In addition you get speedy access to Killarney with scanners in operation to verify your booking right off your phone – no need to print your tickets out or pick them up.

Tickets will also be available at the gate (cash or card!) on the day at the normal prices: R100 for adults, R20 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12 – and as always, WPMC members get in free on production of your membership book at the gate.

There are outlets around the facility serving hot snacks and cold beverages – as well as children’s play areas, including the famous Kiddies’ Korner, the coolest party zone on the West Coast, which is available for hire year-round. On Race Day your kids get to use it absolutely free!

Spectators are free to move around throughout the day; grab a spot on the free shuttle service and watch the action from different vantage points. The pits are always open to spectators, so you can also see the cars and motorcycles up close.

There’s ample parking all around the circuit, so bring your beach umbrella or gazebo, bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottelbraai, park next to one of our brick braais, or just pick a seat on one of our shaded grandstands and make the day your own.
