Published on

Five suspected drug dealers have been shot and killed in Durban. During the operation, officers also confiscated drugs and money.

According to the spokesperson for the national police, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, KwaZulu-Natal police believe they have broken the back of a syndicate behind a spate of shootings and drug-related crimes in the popular port city.

The 5 deaths follow the arrest earlier in the day, of another suspected drug dealer, who was nabbed during an intelligence-driven operation.

Members of the anti-gang unit in KZN were following up on information about the murders of 3 people, including a child on Tuesday 21 March in Springfield, Durban. During their operation, they spotted a vehicle, that fit the description of the vehicle used during the murders.

The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele was also at the scene. He says this incident should send a stern warning to all criminals.

“Well done to all involved. we have been having a challenge of shooting incidents and drug-related crimes in KZN and these suspects are believed to be part of a syndicate operating in Durban and surrounding areas. Good work to the team but there is more that still needs to be done. we are definitely coming for more of them”

The suspect still in custody could face charges of possession of drugs, illegal possession of firearms and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says members of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) were also on the scene.
