Philippi East police have registered a culpable homicide case for investigation following a fatal crash between a Golden Arrow bus and a minibus taxi on Monday morning.

According to Golden Arrow Bus Services spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, it is believed that the driver of the taxi jumped a red traffic light on Sheffield Road, Philippi East, causing the taxi to collide with the bus.

The crash led to the death of the taxi driver and left two other passengers injured.

Dyke-Beyer says the Golden Arrow bus had just departed from the depot and was not carrying any passengers at the time.

Police Sergeant Wesley Twigg says the driver of the minibus taxi was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the two passengers were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment.

“We are deeply saddened to share that the driver of the third-party vehicle passed away at the scene,” added Dyke-Beyer

Twigg says the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident are under investigation.

“Anyone with any information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.”
