The rising cases of foodborne illnesses in the country, particularly those linked to snacks sold at spaza shops, have prompted significant concern. With over 400 reported cases in Gauteng alone and 23 deaths, including more than 10 children in the last two months, the situation is dire.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation this evening at 19:30, outlining the government’s response and potential measures to tackle the crisis.
The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) has also weighed in, urging the government to declare a state of emergency to allocate additional resources and expedite investigations into the sources of the contamination.
The union federation emphasized the urgency of addressing the underlying causes to prevent further loss of life. The President’s address will likely focus on measures to ensure food safety and enhance monitoring of food distribution, especially in informal sectors like spaza shops. This development underscores the need for stronger regulations and awareness campaigns around food handling and storage in vulnerable communities.
