Extreme is more than at Killarney Nationals

Published on

It’s South Africa’s premier motorsport series with South Africa’s top drivers battling it out in closely matched cars – the national championship Extreme Festival hits Killarney for the second and final time this year on Saturday 9 September, and it’s going to be explosive.

This is the penultimate round of the 2023 SA National series; battle lines have been drawn and there are titles at stake.

The most spectacular vehicles on the Extreme Festival programme are the G&H Transport Extreme Supercars, where exotic machines such as Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Audi R8s battle it out against the best from the east, including Nissan GTRs and some highly modified and surprisingly quick street-cars.

The combined GTC & SupaCup races are known for some of the tightest racing in South Africa, with very evenly matched cars – and very determined drivers!

CompCare Polo Cup Racing, you’ll discover, is a contact sport. The fields are big, the majority of the drivers are young, ambitions and aggressive, and the cars are all identical. That’s a recipe for (to put it politely) very robust racing.

The Gazoo Racing SA Cup combines two very different types of car, with six GT86 sports coupes racing against six Yaris GR ‘hot hatches’; which model is faster depends very much on who wants it more.

But the purists will tell you that the most exacting category of circuit racing is the Investchem Formula 1600’s and Formula Ford Kent single-seaters. With open, exposed wheels the slightest touch can be disastrous and precision driving is a pre-requisite. This is not a category for sissies.

Meet South Africa’s top drivers on the Fan Walks during the lunch break; the GTC and Supa Cup cars and drivers will be lined up on the Porsche Straight opposite the pits, while the Extreme Supercar and Polo Cup crews will greet spectators on the Tygerberg Straight between Interceptor Corner and Sarel’s Sweep. With an open paddock policy, you also get an opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes, get autographs etc.

There’s also a full programme of off-track activities to keep the whole family entertained, including public karting on the Kart Track from 10:00am to 5:00pm, a wide range of market stalls, pedal karting for petrolheads-in-training and play areas for children including the famous Kiddies’ Korner, the coolest party zone on the West Coast.

Bring your picnic basket and your cooler box, light up your skottel braai or park next to one of our brick braais. There are outlets all around the facility serving hot snacks (including halaal) and ice-cold beverages.

Pre-book discounted spectator tickets via www.ticketmaster.co.za at R100 for adults, R40 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12.  You also get streamlined access to Killarney with scanners at the gates reading your ticket right off your phone – no need  to print anything out!  Or you can pay at the gate (cash or card!) – R130 for adults, R40 for scholars under 16 and free for children under 12.
