The export of SA wines and grapes to the United Kingdom increased by 15- and 16%, respectively, over the 2020/21 reporting period.

This, according to the province’s trade- and investment agency, Wesgro.

The agency says that this growth in export figures for wines and grapes has been brought about by the introduction of the Cape Trade Portal.

The spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Georgina Maree, says the electronic platform helps local producers advertise and sell their goods to overseas consumers.

Maree says supporting local producers would boost the province’s job-creation abilities.

The portal, supported by the ‘Made in the Cape’ marketing campaign, is proving successful in increasing Cape Town and the Western Cape product and service export competitiveness through increased visibility in the UK.

Born out of the pandemic, the portal has digitized trade to provide ‘always-on’ access to quality Western Cape products and services to buyers across the globe.

The portal was officially launched in February this year, and is already home to over 600 exporters, listing over 3 000 goods and services.

The scale and scope offered by digital platforms increase opportunities for exporters to connect with buyers.

It also builds on the Cape’s reputation as an exporting powerhouse of premium, competitive, diverse, and quality goods.

Following the positive uptake of the campaign by the UK market, Wesgro is preparing to launch a second Made in the Cape edition, this time in the US.

The short-term goals include connecting the right buyers with Western Cape sellers, with a long-term aim to compete with the best region of origin brands globally.
