Environmental degradation increases global and local economic risks

The top five global risks, which are set to have a severe negative effect on the future of the global and local economies, are brought about by the degradation of the natural environment.

According to the latest World Economic Forum Global Risk Report for 2022, climate action failure, extreme weather and biodiversity loss rank as the top three most severe risks in the long term.

CEO at the WWF, Dr Morné du Plessis says the recent severe weather events experienced in South Africa is clear evidence that these threats are a reality.

Du Plessis says for South Africa to mitigate these impacts, immediate action is needed.
