Lieutenant General Sizakhele William Dyantyi’s appointment as the new Western Cape Police Commissioner has been well received.

With Dyantyi set to take the reigns on 1 August, there’s a new air of hope in the fight against crime in the province. At the same time, he has his work cut out for him as organisations expect improved policing.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) said his appointment is an important opportunity to restore stability, strengthen leadership and rebuild morale in the provincial SAPS.

The union believes the province’s new top cop faces an immediate challenge to improve conditions for police officers.

“Lieutenant General Dyantyi is known to the union as a leader who understands that police officers are valuable assets whose welfare, dignity and working conditions directly affect the quality of policing delivered to communities,” said POPCRU’s Mluleki Mbhele.

Mbhele added that it’s also important that he restore public confidence in policing, especially in the Cape Flats that has been plagued by gang violence, shootings, drug-related crime and extortion.

“These communities require sustained, intelligence-led and community-centred policing rather than temporary interventions that provide only short-term relief. POPCRU expects provincial management to strengthen crime intelligence, detective services, visible policing and specialised operations against gangs, illegal firearms, drug syndicates and organised crime. Arrests must be supported by proper investigations capable of producing successful prosecutions,” said Mbhele.

However, the union stressed that its support “should not be interpreted as a blank cheque”, adding that the province requires “decisive, accountable and consultative leadership”.

ActionSA’s Dereleen James also welcomed Dyantyi’s appointment, expressing optimism that his leadership will strengthen the fight against violent crime.

“We are encouraged by his commitment to prioritising gang violence and trust that his experience will translate into decisive action against the criminal networks that continue to terrorise communities across the Western Cape,” said James.

James said she’s hopeful Dyantyi will bring the changes that residents affected by crime have long called for, such as “visible, proactive and intelligence-driven” police force.

She noted that the party is ready to support Dyantyi in “every genuine effort” to combat crime.

MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, said she knows Dyantyi understands first-hand the unique challenges in tackling crime in the province.

“General Dyantyi will undoubtedly hit the ground running. The challenges ahead are significant, but so too are the opportunities to build a safer Western Cape for all,” said Marais.
