Officials attached to the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies have reported a disturbing rise in violent incidents and drunk driving cases during the latest round of weekly patrols and emergency call-outs.
According to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC), 49 physical assault cases and 31 domestic violence incidents were logged on Sunday, 15 June 2025 alone. PECC agents responded to a total of 639 calls that day, including 19 motor vehicle accidents.
Meanwhile, law enforcement cracked down hard on drunk driving. Metro Police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence, while Traffic Services added another 29 impaired driving arrests during integrated roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints—bringing the total to 46 drunk driving arrests across Cape Town.
“The number of motorists arrested for driving under the influence is a concern and remains a challenge on the roads. Drunk drivers pose a serious threat to a safe road environment and increase the risk of fatal accidents. The attitude of drunk drivers who think they will not be caught or simply don’t care cannot be tolerated. Our officers will continue to patrol the roads and arrest those who think they are above the law. We should all use the roads responsibly and respect other road users, ” said Safety and Security MMC JP Smith.
Overall, enforcement agencies issued 47,910 fines and arrested 261 suspects in one week. Metro Police made 68 arrests, including 38 for drug possession and several for firearm, property, and contact crimes. Law Enforcement arrested 163, and Traffic officers impounded 162 public transport vehicles while executing 821 arrest warrants.
The City has once again called on residents to stay vigilant and report crimes by calling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
