Drugs worth an estimated R12 million seized on WC roads in 4 days

Western Cape authorities have executed two massive drug busts on major routes in the province.

In the latest incident, a 60-year-old man has been apprehended at the Klawer weighbridge, yesterday morning. Police responded to a tip-off regarding a silver Jaguar vehicle who was transporting another car on a trailer. Upon their interception, they found 53 bags of what’s believed to be heroin. The narcotics are valued around R3,7 million. The police’s Wesley Twigg explains what happened:

“The search was a result of information that was received about a silver Jaguar with a trailer carrying a Jetta that was en route to Cape Town with drugs hidden in the vehicles. The vehicle fitting the description was stopped and searched. During the search of the vehicle, they found three bags containing heroin in the boot of the vehicle. Upon an extended search to the Jetta the members found 50 more bags possibly containing heroin hidden in the back seat of the vehicle,” says Twigg.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained on a charge of possession of drugs.

He is scheduled to make a court appearance in the Klawer Magistrates’ Court today.

R8 million of dagga on the N1

Just last week, law enforcement officials conducted an operation on the N1 highway, at Beaufort West. On Wednesday, Provincial Traffic Officers conducted a static roadblock along the highway, when they pulled over a truck. One official then detected a strong scent of marijuana, as the Southern Cape police’s sergeant Chris Spies explains:

“The team ensued with a search of the truck. They then discovered and confiscated 22 bags of dagga weighing 1 ton with an estimated street value of R8 million. The driver of the vehicle was arrested in connection with the find.”
