Two suspects who were caught after they allegedly tried to smuggle an assortment of narcotics from the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court into Pollsmoor Prison will remain in custody pending their next court appearance.

Earlier this week, police responded to an anonymous tip-off that illicit substances were in the holding cells of the Wynberg court. Upon their arrival, they discovered dagga, mandrax, tik, alcohol, xanax pills and more.

The narcotics were headed for the notorious Pollsmoor Correctional Centre, in Tokai.

The duo were apprehended and subsequently appeared in the dock where the matter was postponed.

We can confirm that the two accused appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court today on the mentioned drug related charges. They were remanded pending their next appearance. Both are remanded on other offences perpetrated in Hout Bay and Kirstenhof, respectively,” Western Cape Provincial SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

When Smile 90.4 FM followed up to query the other offences, Pojie confirmed that both men are facing charges of alleged rape.

Meanwhile, a Cape Flats community crime activist, Byron De Villiers reckons the smuggling of drugs into Pollsmoor is not foreign, as illicit goods and substances being peddled in and out of the high-security prison happens on an almost daily basis.

“This is the only the tip of the iceberg, hey, because drugs being smuggled in and outside Pollsmoor Prison is nothing new, and it all starts at the courts so I applaud the people who came forward to give the anonymous tip-off, but I think this matter needs to be looked at in depth,” said De Villiers.
