Sea Point police have arrested a man for driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving after he crashed into two runners—a man and a woman—on Victoria Road in Bantry Bay on Sunday morning.
According to reports, both runners were thrown into the air upon impact. The female runner was flung over the side wall of Victoria Road, falling approximately 100 meters down the embankment. This triggered a full-scale rescue operation.
Cape Town Fire and Rescue deployed a crane to hoist the injured woman back to safety. She was then transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police have confirmed that the driver is in custody and that an investigation is underway.
“Two joggers, a man and a woman, were struck by the vehicle. The injured victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment. Anyone with information about this incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” police stated.
Ward Councillor Nicola Jowell later provided an update on Facebook, confirming that the female victim is in stable condition, while the male runner sustained minor injuries and has been discharged from the hospital.
Jowell also expressed gratitude to a medical doctor who had been running nearby and immediately stepped in to assist.
Emphasizing the dangers of drunk driving at any time of the day, she stated that the driver should face an attempted murder charge.
The runners were reportedly members of the Atlantic Running Club, training for the Two Oceans Marathon.
