Department of Basic Education debunks grade 13 rumours

Published on

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has rubbished claims that grade 13 will be implemented next year. Reports have been circulating on social media over the weekend claiming that the matric class of 2025 will not be concluding their schooling journey this year, but that they will be required to complete an additional year of schooling next year.

The viral posts indicate that grade 13 will be added from January 2026. This has led to widespread panic, and an influx of videos with social media users either venting outrage or scoffing at the idea. The DBE’S Faith Mulaudzi has denied the claims and termed this as fake news.

“Don’t fall victim to fake news. With misinformation and disinformation at an all-time high, it is important to be able to tell the difference between legitimate sources of information and those who pedal lies to increase engagement on their pages. Be safe,” said Mulaudzi.
