The City’s Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the blaze at Deer Park on Table Mountain has been largely extinguished following overnight firefighting efforts.
The fire, which broke out on Tuesday afternoon, spread as a result of strong winds and humid conditions.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, provided Smile FM with an update on the blaze on Wednesday morning.
“Deer Park largely extinguished. We sending crews to recon the area this morning.”
Crews are expected to remain on site to monitor flare-ups and ensure the situation remains under control.
The fire had prompted a large-scale response late on Tuesday.
Aerial resources were deployed, while several ground teams worked through the night.
Carelse confirmed that no property was at risk and no injuries were reported.
On Tuesday evening, Carelse advised that the Fire and Rescue Service had set up an Incident Command Post to coordinate resourcing and deployment.
City Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, JP Smith, confirmed that Wednesday’s weather conditions made the battle more difficult.
“Strong winds caused the flames to spread, but we’re taking all necessary precautions to protect our residents. Multiple fire engines are stationed in Bridle Rd as a precaution for our residents, and numerous crews are assisting on the mountain, making excellent progress,” said Smith on Tuesday evening.
Elsewhere in the city, firefighters were also called to Pinelands yesterday, where two thatch-roof dwellings caught alight in Welwyn Avenue. A helicopter was deployed to assist with water bombing operations.
“Both dwellings, one a single storey and the other a double storey, were destroyed in the blaze that was extinguished at 20:50,” confirmed Carelse.
