DA’s last-ditch effort for NERSA to reject Eskom tariff hikes

As the national energy regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is expected to announce its decision on Eskom’s tariff increase, the DA has made an eleventh hour plea for NERSA to reject Eskom’s request.

The power utility has submitted an application for a tariff hike of 36% this year, a 12% increase for next year and a 9% the year thereafter.

The party’s Kevin Mileham says upping tariffs will only worsen the financial pressure on households and businesses, without addressing the root cause of Eskom’s failure. Trade unions and civil society organisations have echoed this sentiment.

“The DA demands that NERSA reject Eskom’s request for a tariff increase, and instead insist on meaningful reforms that address Eskom’s operational and financial failures before considering any further hikes,” said Mileham.

The announcement will be made during a virtual briefing this afternoon.
