The Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth James Vos conducted a site visit to the construction project under way at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), that is scheduled to host more than 400 events this year.

The new site, which is expected to be complete by June 2023, will include a marshalling (loading) yard that will service the CTICC 2 as well as more parking areas for visitors to the centre.

The City’s Property Management Department in the Economic Growth Directorate is co-funding the construction because the CTICC is a pillar of our value proposition as an ideal destination for conferences and events.

This year, the CTICC will host 415 events, which will be attended by 322 283 guests. These events cover a range of industries and themes, including energy, mining, finance, tourism, retail, the film industry, science and technology, agriculture, medicine, education, and sport.

Next year, the CTICC has already confirmed 445 gatherings and 480 in 2025.

Vos says considering that delegates spend between R3 200 and R6 400 per day during their stay, these events drive billions of rands into Cape Town’s economy and generate thousands of jobs for Capetonians.

The City says it is for this reason that it funds and works with the Cape Town and Western Cape Convention Bureau, which is administered by Wesgro.

The bureau has already secured 27 bids for gatherings that will take place in the coming years.

With just these events, nearly R400 million will be injected into the local economy.

Vos says their mission is to make the Mother City the go-to metro for business travel and to create a tourism-related job in every household in Cape Town.
