COVID-19 vaccination rollout programme makes steady progress at old age homes

Published on

Premier Alan Winde says steady progress is being made in ensuring that senior citizens who reside in old age homes receive their COVID-19 vaccine.

As of 25 May 2021, 4426 older persons had been vaccinated across 57 old age homes in the province. This equates to 55% of the province’s target for over 60’s in congregate settings.

Teams are this week visiting old age homes across rural districts, which include 7 old age homes in the Overberg District, 6 in the Garden Route District, 4 in the West Coast District, 1 in the Central Karoo and 29 old age homes in the Cape Winelands.

Winde says there will be a radical ramp up in vaccinations.

“We are aiming to move from vaccinating over 6000 residents per day this week, to 12 000 per day next week, to 24 000 per day the week thereafter. We have worked out our ramp-up plan in accordance with the supply of vaccines we expect to receive. In this regard, we are pleased to report that we are due another shipment of Pfizer doses today, as well as two further shipments in the early weeks of June.”

He says they are eagerly anticipating news on the J&J vaccines, which will allow the Western Cape to do even more.

Overall, the Western Cape will be opening hundreds of sites across the province over the course of the vaccination programme this year.

This includes:

  • 70 sites in the City of Cape Town
  • 48 sites in the Overberg District
  • 53 sites in the West Coast District
  • 14 sites in the Central Karoo District
  • 41 sites in the Garden Route District
