Cooking oil is one of the basic household items that has seen the highest price increases in the past year.

According to Statistics SA, the average price of a 750 ml bottle of sunflower oil retailed at R20,99 in June 2020, which had risen to R29,45 in June 2021 (an increase of 40.3%).

According to Stats SA the three food items which saw the heaviest prices increases in the past year are oils (> 21.6%), meat (> 8.6%) and sugar & sugar products (> 7.2%).
