The Councillor for Ward 45 in Muizenberg, which includes Overcome Heights, Seawinds, Vrygrond, and Xakabantu, says the community is living in fear following two deadly mass shootings in the space of just a few days.
In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 13 August, four men, aged between 20 and 37, were gunned down on Mountain Road in Overcome Heights. According to police, gangsterism has not been ruled out as a possible motive.
Late on Saturday night, 16 August, three people, one man and two women, aged between 29 and 32, were shot dead at Mike Place, Xakabantu.
A fourth victim, a man, survived after sustaining a gunshot wound and managed to escape.
In both instances, there have been no arrests.
While police did not speculate on the possible motive for the second shooting, Ward Councillor Mandy Marr says the community has been raising concerns about a possible link between these killings and the release of a specific individual from prison.
The person in question is an alleged gang member, and the victims in the Xakabantu shooting were alleged members of the Junky Funky Kids.
“While I must be careful not to speculate, what I can confirm is that SAPS is actively investigating all of these incidents. It appears these are gang-related, and my focus is on ensuring a strong police presence and swift investigation.”
Marr says she is concerned that a dangerous pattern is developing and a strategy is needed to prevent it from escalating.
Marr says if it is found that there is a direct link between the individual released on parole and the crimes being committed, then the relevant authorities must review his parole.
“The safety of our community is the top priority, and if a person poses a continued threat, their conditions of release must be re-evaluated.”
Police have deployed additional resources to the area, including anti-gang unit members and LEAP officers. But Marr says this is cold comfort, as the community feels angry and let down.
“My job is to amplify their concerns and continue to press for a more effective solution. A police response must be about prevention and disruption, not just reaction.”
Marr says residents must stand united and remain vigilant.
“I know you are scared and tired, but we cannot allow fear to win. We must look out for one another and cooperate with the authorities. I urge you to report any and all information you have, no matter how small you think it is. We are stronger together and by working as a Community we can take back our streets and reclaim our peace.”
