The taxi association, CODETA, has confirmed to SmileFM that it will be submitting court papers on Thursday, challenging the closure of certain taxi routes in Cape Town.
This is more than 24 hours after the official implementation of route closures between Khayelitsha and Somerset West, which the association has not supported.
At the time of publication, CODETA’s Nceba Enge said that the documents were still being written up.
“CODETA is submitting today [Thursday] and going to court tomorrow opposing the closure of the route,” Enge told SmileFM.
COSATU also recently voiced its opposition to the route closure, noting that the decision “will have a severe and negative impact on thousands of commuters and the working class across the province”.

Meanwhile, giving an update on the first day of the 30-day closure, Mobility MEC, Isaac Sileku, said it was relatively peaceful. This is besides the impoundment of several minibus taxis by the City’s team with the Joint Operations Centre.

“We are very encouraged that there has not been any incidents of people being shot or being killed or being intimidated. And all the different modes of transport have been operating smoothly. And we hope and we believe that it will continue this way up until we find an amicable solution,” said Sileku.
