MyCiTi bus commuters are being cautioned against a social media scam offering six months of free travel, promoted through a page called “Cape Town public transport card”.

The City of Cape Town warns that these posts, which prompt users to click on a link for the supposed offer, are fraudulent and should not be trusted.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Mobility, Rob Quintas, confirmed that the posts, circulating on platforms like Facebook, are not endorsed by the City.

“These fraudulent posts are circulating on Facebook and possibly other social media channels. We have reported this account and its contents to Meta/Facebook and requested the urgent removal of posts.”

The “Cape Town public transport card” page has a managed to gain a following with the misleading claims.  Quintas encouraged anyone who sees these fraudulent posts to report them directly on Facebook by selecting the ‘Scam, fraud or impersonation’ category under the ‘Find support or report’ option.

To prevent similar scams, residents are reminded to verify information by referring to official MyCiTi social media accounts, the MyCiTi website, and the City of Cape Town’s website.

Quintas also recommended that individuals avoid suspicious links and refrain from sharing sensitive information unless confident of the source’s legitimacy.

For further clarification on MyCiTi promotions or posts, residents can contact the City’s Transport Information Centre at 080 065 64 63, any time of day. Alternatively, inquiries can be sent via email to transport.info@capetown.gov.za.
