While many choose to venture to the seaside this Easter long weekend, the National Sea Rescue Institute has appealed for caution along coastlines as the full moon Spring Tide is still in full effect.
The Spring tide, which sees higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides, will gradually decline in its intensity towards the end of the Easter Weekend but remains a potential risk to bathers around the coastline – especially during the outgoing tide.
“Swim at beaches protected by lifeguards. Swim in between the safer demarcated swimming zones posted by lifeguards using their red and yellow flags.” NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon
Lambinon also urged Inland water users to be cautious bathing, boating and paddling on rivers, lakes and dams where heavy rainfall is forecast for places.
In addition, citizens are urged to follow the daily weather forecasts from the South African Weather Service.
“Be aware of adverse weather, strong winds, fast-flowing rivers and sea drifts.”
The institute has appealed to boaters, paddlers, and sailors to prioritize safety on the water.
“wear life jackets when your craft is underway, carry safety equipment and download and use the free NSRI SafeTrx smartphone app.”
Even backyard swimming pools should adhere to safety protocols. There is a renewed call on parents to supervise their children responsibly in and around water bodies.
“To everyone, we are appealing to you to be safety cautious this Easter Weekend – Let’s keep each other safe.”
Safety along hiking routes
