The City of Cape Town says it has responded to several fires in recent days, with the Disaster Risk Management Centre warning residents to exercise extra caution around open flames and flammable materials, especially during strong windy conditions.
The City’s Sonica Lategan says at least 500 people have been affected by fires in informal settlement areas since last Thursday.
“Today, Disaster Officers are on the scene in Phumlani Village after a fire destroyed an estimated 17 structures, affecting 77 residents last night.”
She added that several other fires have wreaked havoc across the city in recent days:
- Overcome Heights – 120 people affected
- Khayelitsha – 303 people affected
- Witsands, Atlantis – 32 people affected
Humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers says it has been an extremely demanding week for its teams.
“Gift of the Givers teams are working closely with community leaders to assess the urgent humanitarian needs of affected families and provide immediate support.”
Lategan further urged the public to remain vigilant as rising temperatures in the coming days could increase both the risk and impact of fires.
“If you spot a fire, please report it immediately. The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre can be reached at 021 480 7700.”
