Cele says contact crimes have shown a significant decrease

Published on

Police Minister Bheki Cele says except for the murder rate many other contact crimes have shown a significant decrease over the past festive season.

The Minister this morning released the October to December 2021 crime statistics.

He said criminals normally use this period of festivities to target members of the public.

Cele said the police’s Festive Season Operational Plan helped keep crime to a minimum.

South Africa also recorded a 9% decrease in the number of reported rape cases in the last three months of 2021.

Cele says 11,315 people were sexually assaulted between October and December last year.

He says this is a decrease of 903 rape cases when compared to the previous reporting period.
