Police Minister Bheki Cele has called for greater punishment of those who attack and kill police officers.

The Minister visited the Mother City this week to engage with the Western Cape police service, after the murder of two police officers in Bloekombos over the weekend.

Cele also paid the families of the two murdered officers, a 28-year old and 45-year old, a visit, to pay his respects.

He congratulated police for the speedy arrest of one suspect in connection with the double-murder.

Cele says he has engaged with the National Minister of Defence to work towards the possible deployment of the Defence Force to crime hotspot areas in the Western Cape.

He says cooperation is key in boosting the safety of Western Cape residents.
