The City of Cape Town is “overrun” with cyclists, as excitement is building ahead of this Sunday’s 47th installment of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. A flurry of activity is happening behind the scenes of the world’s largest-timed cycle race.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the Mother City’s long-standing jewel events,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

About 30 000 cyclists will take part in the race of which there will be three routes. This includes the traditional 109km route from the Grand Parade circling the Cape Peninsula on 9 March 2025.

Smith added, “Its impact on our city’s economy and destination marketing over the last five decades cannot be overstated.”

The other two races are the 78km Invitational Women’s Race and the U17 Boys Race. Entrants will start from Fish Hoek and finish in Green Point. There’s also a less demanding challenge which is the 42km route from the Grand Parade to the Southern Suburbs, which finishes in the City Centre. This will take place for the third year in a row.

47 Countries represented at Cycle Tour 2024

According to the race organizers the Cycle Tour in 2024 had attracted more than 10 500 cyclists from outside the Western Cape. They were from 46 countries. Adding local cyclists brought the overall tally to 47 nations.

Road Closures

Residents and visitors to the Mother City are reminded that several roads will be closed. There will be important road closures from Thursday, 6 March, to Sunday, 9 March 2025. Roads in Green Point, Sea Point, the Southern Suburbs and the Deep South will be affected.

“Its growth during this period has coincided with a rising interest in outdoor sports, an increase in the number of people taking up cycling in our city, and a growing sense of community around fitness and well-being.”
