Cape Town Libraries Offer Fine-Free Week for Children

Published on

Cape Town libraries are giving children a chance to return overdue books without paying fines during a special fine-free week from 15 to 20 December.

Currently, 10 000 children’s books are outstanding, valued at over R2.2 million, with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series taking seven of the top 10 spots.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, encourages parents to return books and take advantage of holiday programmes at local libraries.

“It is heartening to see our children’s love for books and how they enjoy reading them over and over. By returning books, we can share the joy of a story and discover new adventures. Parents, please encourage your children to return their books, as it helps keep our collections diverse and teaches them responsibility.”

She also reminded parents that reading material should benefit everyone, which is only possible if outstanding items are returned.

During this period, patrons under 18 can also apply for a free replacement of their library cards.
