Cape Town fires spark concern over possible arson

Published on

The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security MMC JP Smith has called for a forensic investigation, following a string of fires in Cape Town. He has raised the alarm after multiple fires erupted across the Mother City, fueling suspicions of arson.

A blaze broke out early Sunday morning on the slopes above Newlands. On Tuesday, the fire reignited. Soon thereafter, another fire was reported near Red Hill, where according to the City, aerial footage revealed it had started suspiciously along a deserted road. A third fire was recorded along Black River Parkway. By Wednesday afternoon, the fires were largely contained.

“Such political games can have devastating consequences, resulting in the loss of life and damage to property. For this reason, I have asked our management within our service to collate all evidence and to provide this to SANParks, the custodian of the Table Mountain National Park, and then for them to open up a criminal case of arson and to launch a forensic investigation into these attacks,” said Smith.
