Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) saw a record-breaking festive season in December 2024, with over 533,000 passenger arrivals, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period last year.
Tourism officials say the rise in arrivals underscores Cape Town’s growing reputation as a top global travel destination.
The total of 533,829 arrivals included:
- International arrivals: 160,537 (up 3.7%)
- Regional arrivals: 10,491 (up 22.5%)
- Domestic arrivals: 362,222 (up 2.3%)
Regional travel saw the most dramatic growth, with a 22.5% surge in arrivals from neighbouring countries, reflecting Cape Town’s appeal within the region.
Meanwhile, international and domestic arrivals also recorded steady gains, with increases of 3.7% and 2.3%, respectively.
Boosting Tourism Through Air Connectivity
James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, highlighted the city’s strategic focus on improving air access as a key driver of growth.
“Cape Town’s partnerships with airlines and the introduction of more frequent flights, especially seasonal routes, have been game-changers for our tourism sector,” said Vos. “This enhanced air connectivity not only makes it easier for travellers to visit but also strengthens our city’s position as a leading destination.”
A Destination for All
Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, praised the city’s strong tourism performance and its ability to draw visitors from near and far.
“These figures reflect growing confidence in Cape Town as a world-class destination,” said Duminy.
“Whether it’s locals rediscovering their home or international travellers experiencing our iconic attractions, Cape Town continues to captivate visitors with its unique charm and unmatched appeal.”
Recognition as a Global Hotspot
Cape Town’s latest tourism figures come on the heels of its recognition as the Best City in the World by Time Out.
The city consistently ranks among the top global travel destinations and is celebrated for its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and sustainable tourism initiatives.
With more visitors choosing Cape Town for their holidays, Duminy and Vos say the city has reinforced its status as a hub for inclusive, responsible, and memorable travel experiences.
