It is World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) and to commemorate the occasion, Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Nomalungelo Gina has called on suppliers to adhere to regulations enforced by various consumer protection bodies.

This year’s WCRD theme, ‘Safe Products, Safe Consumers: Fostering Accountability and Compliance’, draws attention to the vital issue of product safety in the South African consumer market.

During celebrations, the minister will deliver a keynote address highlighting the significance of consumer rights and the government’s commitment to ensuring consumer safety.

“WCRD serves as a crucial reminder of the responsibilities we hold as custodians of consumer interests. It is imperative that we continue to foster accountability and compliance among suppliers to safeguard the well-being of consumers.”

This comes following recalls of products containing peanut butter in recent weeks. The recalls were made after higher than regulated levels of aflatoxin were found in the products.

In February, the National Consumer Commission issued a notice to all manufacturers of peanut butter and peanut butter based items to get their products tested.

Until now, the only products that have been recalled are:

  • Woolworths’ Peanut Butter Ice Cream
  • products from the ”Eat Naked” range
  • Colver’s Go Nuts Peanut Butter
  • Pick ‘n Pay’s ”No Name Smooth Peanut Butter
  • Eden Smooth Peanut Butter
  • Eden Crunch Peanut Butter
  • Dischem’s Lifestyle 400 grams Smooth and Crunchy
  • Dischem’s Lifestyle 800 grams Smooth and Crunchy
  • Wazoogles Superfoods- all sizes starting from 32g to 20 KG
