UPDATE: Cableway operations to resume

Safety experts have given the go-ahead for cableway operations on Table Mountain to continue from tomorrow, Wednesday 30 October.

 

The attraction has been closed since Friday, after a fire the day before. The Aerial Cableway Company says normal services will resume on Wednesday morning.

 

People who bought tickets for the weekend have a certain window period to visit or request a refund. Visitors who were unable to celebrate their October birthday can claim their free ticket next month.

 

A fire in the parking garage at the lower cableway station brought services to a halt last Thursday, after a bank of lithium batteries caught alight.

 

At the time, the Managing Director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, Wahida Parker said the fire did not reach the machinery that operates the movement of the cable cars.

 

She added that they were able to safely bring people down from the top of the mountain yesterday. Over 400 people had to be brought down in the cable cars.
