In a week’s time Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will table his 2025 budget speech. It’s the first budget speech since the formation of the Government of National Unity.
While South Africans wait in angst to hear what he will say, the Automobile Association (AA) has written to Godongwana asking that he place transport and mobility at the top of his agenda. In addition, the AA wants the minister to reduce the price of fuel and to prioritise road safety. AA spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela said the country critical challenges in road infrastructure, public transport, fuel pricing and road safety.
“Public transport remains the backbone of mobility for millions, yet it is underfunded and unreliable. The minibus taxi industry, despite serving most commuters, lacks sufficient government support for modernization and safety improvements. Our rail system, once a pillar of affordable transport, is struggling due to underinvestment and mismanagement,” said Mavimbela.
Dear Minister of Finance, transport and mobility aren’t luxuries— they’re necessities for the success of our economy. South Africans, what transport issue should be top priority in this budget? The price of fuel continues to climb, and creates a domino effect, placing a major burden on business and consumers.
“Fuel pricing remains a significant concern for motorists and businesses alike. The rising cost of fuel, exacerbated by high levies, places immense financial pressure on consumers and affects the cost of goods and services. We urge a review of the fuel levy structure to provide relief to motorists while exploring alternative, sustainable funding models for road maintenance and the Road Accident Fund,” added Mavimbela.
The highly anticipated budget speech will be delivered in the National Assembly, next Wednesday (19 February) . Minister Godongwana will also use the opportunity to introduce the Appropriation Bill and table the 2025 Division of Revenue Bill.
