The City has once again teamed up with the Young Urbanists to deliver exciting Open Streets events this summer, which will see Bree Street transformed into a pedestrian paradise most Sundays from now until March next year.
The popular and highly fashionable Bree Street will be shut to vehicular traffic from 10:00 – 17:00 on Sundays, with an open invitation to families to make the most of this opportunity, by bringing their bicycles, skateboards, picnic blankets, street games and arts and crafts.
Every last Sunday of the month, it’s Langa’s turn, with Lerotholi Avenue and King Langalibalele Drive that will be pedestrianised from 12:00 – 17:00 (except in December.)
Several collaborators are working with the City and Young Urbanists to make this happen in Langa, including Langa Bicycle Hub, Tekano SA, Bridges Academy, 16 on Lerotholi, Langa Safety Patrol, Langa Community Advice Services, Project Playground, Local South, Jordan, and Ubizo Events & Tours.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the inclusivity of these Open Streets events is remarkable:
“Whenever I visit these Open Streets, I am struck by how many families there are from all over Cape Town. That is the purpose of good public space – it should bring people together, not keep people out. And these Open Streets do exactly that. Families from across the city come to enjoy them, and we should all love and celebrate that.”
The Metro is contributing funding support to this partnership with the Young Urbanists and other collaborators.
Hill-Lewis says the City says the aim is to have Open Streets events a standard feature across the Metropole, and not just one-offs.
The Mayor has invited Capetonians to come and enjoy together on Sundays with their families and friends in this safe and car-free space.
“We also hope to see you in Langa on the last Sunday of each month for a lekker open streets vibe in one of Cape Town’s most culturally-rich neighbourhoods.”
