BOSA calls for sex offenders register to be made public

A petition by Build One South Africa (BOSA) for the National Register of Sexual Offenders (NRSO) to be made public, and to be easily accessible has garnered more than 12 000 signatures.

The petition was launched by BOSA during women’s month. The matter has been re-thrust into the spotlight amid the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign.

The party says the current system is time-consuming, requires one to pay a fee of R150 and there is a waiting period of at least six weeks. BOSA’s Roger Solomons said this does not promote transparency and impedes on the accountability of sex offenders.

“We are calling for perpetrators, sexual offenders to be named and shamed, especially during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence so we are calling on all concerned citizens to rally behind this call and to sign the petition online,” said Solomons.

The number of signatures are currently at 12 361 and the goal is to reach 15 000. Members of the public who would like to sign the petition can do so here.
