Bail proceedings of alleged Bellville baby snatcher delayed again

Published on

The case against the woman accused of abducting a newborn baby from a Bellville shopping centre has hit another delay, as her bid to alter her bail conditions was postponed again.

Sameemah Jacobs appeared at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where her legal team requested additional time to finalise an affidavit. Action Society, which has been overseeing the case, said this marks the third postponement of the same issue, sparking frustration among those closely following the case.

Outside the court, the baby’s mother, Imaan Sharmer, said the repeated delays had taken a heavy toll.

“It is frustrating, and it takes an emotional toll on me, physically, emotionally, and I’m not gonna lie… it’s financially straining as well, because at the end of the day, I’m losing money out at work,” Sharmer told Action Society.

Sharmer added that she intends to be present at every court appearance, as she feels her baby “deserves justice”.

Her son was allegedly taken when he was just nine days old. The child was found three days later in Mitchells Plain.

While he is said to have been unharmed, Sharmer said the trauma of the ordeal remains.

“Those three days, I will never get back,” she said.

Action Society’s Kaylynn Palm criticised the repeated postponement.

“The magistrate indicated [on Tuesday] also that this isn’t a complex matter to which we completely completely agree with,” said Palm.

Palm said the organisation hopes that the next court appearance would finally allow the case to progress.

Jacobs is expected back in court on 6 November.
