The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has condemned a false bomb threat made at Wynberg Girls’ High School, which caused widespread disruption on Wednesday.

The threat led to the immediate evacuation of the high school, as well as Wynberg Girls’ and Boys’ junior schools, while police conducted a search of the premises.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond described the incident as deeply concerning, saying it not only caused panic but could have had serious consequences had it occurred during the matric exam period.

“We appeal to the public to refrain from making false threats, as such actions are punishable by law and can have severe consequences.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wesley Twigg confirmed that the SAPS K9 Unit was sent to the scene and that the school was declared safe after thorough checks.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, and no arrests have been made.”
