Assault case opened after learner attacked at Wittebome High School

Published on

Police have confirmed that an assault case has been opened following an incident involving two learners at a secondary school in Wynberg earlier this week.

The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday, when a Grade 8 learner at Wittebome High School was allegedly attacked by a classmate.

According to the school, the confrontation stemmed from online and media-related issues that occurred over the weekend.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Millicent Merton, said school staff immediately attended to the injured learner and contacted the parents of both learners.

Merton added that the alleged perpetrator left the school premises without permission after the altercation.

“The school is taking disciplinary action against the learner,” she confirmed.

The department has reportedly also assigned a district-based support team to provide counselling and assistance to the affected learners.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed that an assault case was registered at Lentegeur SAPS and will be transferred to Wynberg SAPS for further investigation.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made yet,” he said.

The incident is the latest school-related assault reported in the province, raising renewed concerns about learner safety and the influence of social media on school conflicts.
