Bishop Lavis Police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with a fatal shooting incident in the Bonteheuwel area on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to the sound of gunshots going off in the area while they were patrolling.

Police Sergeant Wesley Twigg says the officers responded and drove in the direction where they heard the gunshots.

The body of a 31-year-old man was found on the corner of Boekenhout Street and Bramble Way, Bonteheuwel, with fatal gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene.

Twigg added that Flying Squad members also responded to the shooting incident, noticed two males fleeing the scene and gave chase.

“The suspects were apprehended and searched and were found in with a .38 Special revolver with ammunition and a 9mm pistol in their possession.”

The 25- and 39-year-old suspects are due to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged. They face charges for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and murder.

While police have not yet specified the motive for the shooting, Bonteheuwel ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, says he has been informed that the suspects are known gang members and alleged hitmen operating within the community.

McKenzie has indicated that four suspects have been arrested for the murder, but this has not been confirmed by police.

“This is a massive victory for the people of Bonteheuwel and sends a clear message that when residents work together with law enforcement, criminals have nowhere to hide.”
