Another cold front makes landfall in Cape Town

Published on

Cape Town is set to endure another bout of cold and rainy weather, with residents and city officials preparing for cold front expected to last until Sunday. Rainfall has already begun across parts of the metro, and the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several warnings for the coming days.

A Level 4 yellow warning was issued for disruptive rain across the Western Cape from Thursday through to Sunday, with potential impacts including localised flooding of roads and informal settlements, and the saturation of waterways.

Damaging winds (Level 2) are forecast between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas on Friday, posing risks for small vessels. Additionally, a Level 2 warning for damaging waves is in place from Cape Agulhas to Plettenberg Bay from Saturday through Monday morning.

Charlotte Powell of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Centre confirmed that the City will coordinate the emergency response and has activated NGO partners to provide humanitarian support, to those affected by the cold front.

She urged residents to take preventative action, such as clearing stormwater drains, raising floor levels where possible, and ensuring properties are rainproof.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, appealed to the public to drive cautiously during wet weather and to support ongoing disaster relief efforts.

“Our NGO partners do sterling work under trying conditions. If you are able, please support our donation drive,” said Smith.

Donation drop-off points have been set up at fire stations in Constantia, Goodwood, Hout Bay, Lakeside, Roeland Street, Strand, and Wynberg. Items needed include non-perishable food, clothing, baby formula, and hygiene products. Residents can also arrange collections via email at Disaster.Donations@capetown.gov.za.

City officials remain on standby to respond swiftly, though assessments and interventions may be delayed due to the severe weather.
