The Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu has lauded the work of the South African Police Services, after a Limpopo police officer was nabbed for allegedly committing insurance fraud and multiple murders.

The policewoman allegedly killed people, in order to cash out on their insurance claims. The 43-year-old woman was arrested whilst on duty on Thursday.

The suspect has reportedly already pocketed about R10 million in claims.

The sergeant was arrested following a lengthy probe by Captain Keshi Mabunda on allegations that she was fraudulently benefiting from funeral, accidental and life policy covers from various banks and insurance companies.

Minister Mchunu praised the work of SAPS detectives: “I want to take this moment to commend Captain Mabunda and his team for their tireless and meticulous work in bringing this rogue officer to justice. Their dedication to the rule of law and the protection of our citizens is an embodiment of the integrity we expect from the SAPS. The nature of these crimes is deeply disturbing, with the victims meeting their ends in various violent ways. Such cruelty and disregard for human life is utterly reprehensible, and it is all the more shocking when perpetrated by someone sworn to uphold the law and protect the innocent,” said Mchunu.

‘CRIMES DATE BACK TO 2019’

Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the sergeant began her killing spree in 2019.

“Her victims were known to her and were from destitute and disadvantaged background and some were disabled or mentally challenged. She would take out life policy and funeral covers on their behalf and she would be the beneficiary,” explained police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane District Court on 6 counts of murder and about 17 cases of fraud on Friday, 11 October 2024.
